Keeping Routines During School Holidays ☀️

Making School Holidays More Enjoyable for the Whole Family

As we step into July, it's school holiday time again! ☀️ While it's a wonderful opportunity for children to rest, play, and spend quality time with family, the change in routine can sometimes make it harder for children to stay calm, regulated, and organised, particularly for children with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, or other developmental needs.

The good news is that school holidays don't need to be perfectly planned. Keeping a few predictable "anchors" throughout the day can help children feel secure while still leaving plenty of room for fun, flexibility, and meaningful family time.

Why a little routine goes a long way

Children thrive when they know what to expect. Keeping a few predictable "anchors" throughout the day can help children:

🌿 Feel calmer and more regulated

🌿 Transition more easily between activities

🌿 Maintain healthy sleep and self-care habits

🌿 Reduce anxiety around unexpected changes

🌿 Feel more confident and enjoy everyday experiences

Remember, routines don't need to be strict. A few predictable parts of the day are often enough to help children feel secure while still leaving room for spontaneity and fun.

Simple holiday activities that support development

Many holiday activities naturally help children learn and build everyday skills. Here are a few ideas from our Occupational Therapists:

✨ Bake together to practise sequencing and fine motor skills.

✨ Head outdoors for playgrounds, bike rides, or obstacle courses to build balance, coordination, and body awareness.

✨ Get creative with arts and crafts to strengthen hand skills and creativity.

✨ Play board games to encourage turn-taking, flexible thinking, and problem-solving.

✨ Involve your child in household jobs like setting the table or watering plants to build confidence and independence.

Some of the most valuable learning happens through play, everyday routines, and meaningful family experiences.

How children's occupational therapy can help

School holidays can be a wonderful opportunity to practise new skills without the usual demands of school and busy schedules.

Through meaningful, play-based activities, children's occupational therapy helps children build the skills they need to participate more confidently in everyday life. Depending on your child's needs, an Occupational Therapist may support:

✅ Building routines that work for your family

✅ Developing emotional and sensory regulation strategies

✅ Improving self-care and independence

✅ Strengthening motor and play skills

✅ Building confidence through meaningful everyday activities

At Integral Occupational Therapy in Chatswood, we support children across the North Shore through personalised, play-based therapy. Our clinic includes sensory and therapeutic play equipment that provides meaningful sensory input while helping children build regulation, confidence, and participation in everyday life.

There is no perfect school holiday routine. A balance of predictable routines, meaningful play, and opportunities for independence can help children—and the whole family—enjoy a calmer, more connected holiday together.
